Entering overtime of Aquinas' second-round playoff match against Calvary Day, Fighting Irish coach Tommy Garcia told his team if it was going to win, its seniors needed to get it done.

Three minutes into overtime, they delivered.

Aquinas senior Sydney Thompson made a nice cross pass to senior Christine Lewis at the top of the goalbox, and Lewis shot the ball into the net for what proved to be the game-winner in a 4-3 Irish victory.

"Before the overtime we talked about our senior leadership," Garcia said. "We put the responsibilities on their shoulders in overtime to make things happen and they did that."

The win propels the Irish (12-5) into the Class A-AA quarterfinals.

"We have gone to the second round for many consecutive seasons, but this is the first time going to the third in a long time," Garcia said.

Thompson, Anne Marie Velky, and Sarah Ingram scored for Aquinas in the first half.

Calvary Day (10-4) entered the second half trailing 3-1 but dominated possession.

Ten minutes into the second half, Macey Edwards scored to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Three minutes later, Megan Salter scored for Calvary Day on a free kick as the ball deflected off the crossbar and into the goal to tie the game.

"It didn't end the way we wanted it to but that's the realization," Calvary Day coach Matt Meeks said. "We now have to get ready for next season. But I couldn't be more proud of them, to play through and come back and get it into overtime."
