Lady Irish soccer opens playoffs April 30 Print E-mail
phoca_thumb_l_Aquinas20Soccer20201020019The Aquinas girls soccer team won the GHSA A/AA Region 8 title and opens the state playoffs April 30 at home vs. Toombs County.

The Lady Irish attack is lead by freshman forward Sydney Thompson (29 goals), and senior midfielder Christine Lewis (14 goals). On the defensive side of the ball, the Irish count on senior midfielder, Anne Marie Velky and sophomore center backs Lauren Gubosh and Taylor Schneider.

Contributions on the attack from wing forwards Jen Salizzoni, Mary Rose Ziemba and Megan O'Brien have been tough for teams to handle.

In the midfield, Izzy Serji and Mary Prestifilippo are steady and fierce defenders both capable of effective ball distribution. The backfield is well Christin Hayes, Allison Goodwin and Cameron Goodwin, and utility player Alexis Kenny. Kenny, a freshman, has performed admirably in all three lines this season.

phoca_thumb_l_IMG_6234The Irish are just as capable off the bench with solid performances from Kathryn Craw, Sarah Ingram and Ivey Wright. The goaltending duties are shared by senior Gaby Blanco and freshman Millie Smith. The Fightin’ Irish have improved steadily this season. The girls owe their improvement to the quality of non-region competition they’ve faced this season. Local soccer powerhouses Greenbrier, Lakeside, Evans and Atlanta area powers, Pace Academy, and Greater Atlanta Christian were on the schedule. Columbus-based Pacelli and tournament bound Grovetown, GMC and Toombs County were also in the mix for the Irish. Aquinas has faced nine GHSA playoff bound teams this season.

Toombs County will be tough first round foe. Aquinas (10-5) defeated Toombs County (10-6) the week of April 19 at Toombs, but expects them to be well prepared to return the favor on April 30. The Lady Irish will rely on their improved teamwork and commitment to solid defensive play to carry them into the second round. Game time on Friday is 6:30 p.m. at Aquinas Stadium.
