Comments courtesy of Tim Moses:

Tuesday night's boys soccer game followed a solid 2-1 win by the Lady Irish against Putnam County, a AA opponent.  Way to go girls!!

The boys match against Putnam County proved a defensive struggle for the first 29 minutes.  While the Irish controlled the ball mostly on its offensive side, Putnam County packed it in on defense.  The Irish offensive weapons tried shot after shot, several of them glancing off the visitors, but to no avail.  The visitors managed to get off only two shots, but Will Doss collected them both in for solid saves.  Zach Lovering played outstanding as holding midfielder, as did Nick Zabala and Hunter Rafoth, shutting down the offensive charges, and redirecting the ball to the Irish end of the field.  At one point in the first half, there was a very exciting stretch that saw two brilliant slide tackles, the first by Senior Garrison Wilcox, which was followed less than 10 seconds later by Junior Austin Worden.  Denied! Although we hear more about the scoring, this is the type of defensive play that has been so remarkable and consistent this season.  Keep it up boys!

Nearing the 30 minute mark in the first half, the Irish finally broke the ice on a free kick.  Connor Tierney tapped the ball then stepped aside just in time for Daniel Leonard to rip a blistering shot low and hard underneath the jumping feet of the five opponents who had established a "wall" in front of the goal.  Then, approximately thirty seconds after the restart, Marcus Wade threw the ball in to Matt Moses who battled a defender, and held him off on his left shoulder, all the way to the goal.  2-0.  Senior Adams Smith added another goal in the first half to increase the Irish lead to 3-0.  Then, with less than 10 seconds left in the first half, Zach Lovering made a great pass to Nix Duncan who displayed the accuracy of his left foot and found the net.  The half ended with a score of 4-0.

The second half again proved to be a defensive battle, although the Irish had several chances.  Finally, Matt Moses collected another throw-in and took the ball down the right side.  As he neared the goal, he took a shot, which was blocked by the keeper and rolled away from the goal.  Following his own shot, Moses kicked the rebound into the net making it 5-0.  From there, the "bald eagles" took over and played solidly.  The Irish lead was increased to 6-0 on Daniel Leonard's second goal of the evening.  And that's where it stood when the final whistle blew as Junior Matt Ross was only tested once in goal during the second half, making the save, of course.

Following the game, Coach Kevin Trammell stated that he was pleased at the progress the team continues to make both mentally and physically.  "I was impressed at how the team did not get too frustrated during the first half and recognized that we would eventually score. The defense did great, allowing few shots on goal and no real quality scoring opportunities for Putnam."

Aquinas Boys are now 4-0, and face their first "Area" opponent, Lakeview Academy this Friday, @ Home @ 7:30pm.

Also, please note:  the soccer games Saturday against Pace have been moved to the Augusta Arsenal Park Field #1
BOYS @ 1:00pm
GIRLS @ 3:00pm
