Irish open state playoffs at home Print E-mail
836827The Aquinas boys basketball team open the 2010 GHSA Class A State playoffs at home on Friday, Feb. 26, against Calhoun County.

The Fighting Irish (19-6) came in second at the Region 4-A Tournament, falling to champion Wilkinson County 66-61 in overtime on Feb. 20. Three of Aquinas' six losses this season came at the hands at Wilkinson County (27-0), the No. 1-ranked team in the state.

The Irish defeated Georgia Military 65-23 in the region quarterfinals on Feb. 17 and defeated Hancock Central 40-38 on Feb. 19 to advance to the region championship game.

Calhoun County, out of Region 1-A, finished the season with an 11-9 record.

If Aquinas wins on Friday, they will advance to play in the second round on March 2 and face the winner of the Dooly County-Claxton first-round contest. The Irish would be at home in the second round if Claxton advances, but would be on the road if Dooly County wins. Dooly County is the top seed in the bracket.

Tip-off for Friday's first round playoff game at Aquinas is 6 p.m. Tickets are $7, and no passes will be accepted.
