Irish Fall to Wilkinson County Print E-mail

irish football helmetWILKINSON COUNTY 39, AQUINAS 17

PLAY OF THE GAME: After Ethan LaPan hit a 47-yard field goal to cut Wilkinson County's lead to 32-17, Ricky Jones ended any hope of an Irish comeback, displaying his speed on a 65-yard touchdown run for the only score in the fourth quarter.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Wilkinson County quarterback Calvin Harris threw three touchdown passes and finished with 194 passing yards.

WHY WILKINSON COUNTY WON: The Warriors (6-1, 2-0 Region 7-A) scored two touchdowns within 20 seconds in the first quarter to deflate the Irish (0-2, 3-4).

WHY AQUINAS LOST: Aquinas put itself in a hole early because of miscues. A roughing-the-punter penalty and a fumble on the ensuing kickoff led to Wilkinson touchdowns and a 13-0 Warrior advantage in the first quarter.

QUOTABLE: "We slacked off some on defense. We don't like to give up more than seven points. We have to work on our defense (in preparation for Washington-Wilkes and Lincoln County)." -- Wilkinson County coach James Hagins
