Aquinas' Erin Hawk won't have a long drive to make if he wants to go back home.

On Friday, the Fighting Irish pitcher and shortstop signed with Augusta State, where he hopes to pitch as a freshman.

"It's awesome," Hawk said. "It's not far from where I played my high school career and my whole life."

Hawk went 6-2 with a 3.37 ERA for the Fighting Irish this season as Aquinas went undefeated in Region 7-A play. In 2010, Hawk helped the Irish advance to the Class A state championship series.

Aquinas coach Mike Laney said the signing was a reward for Hawk's effort the past 10 years.

He was especially happy to see Hawk sign because of all the doubters.

With Hawk listed at 5-foot-6, Laney said he had to prove himself, and the pitcher's success and college signing are evidence he did.

Laney is most impressed with how Hawk can handle his four-pitch arsenal.

"He has the best control of any kid I've ever seen," Laney said. "It's good to see hard work pays off."
